Whole town showed up
Gymnasium filled
Floor was wet
From all the tears spilled
And the preacher man said
We're all gathered today
And I'll never forget
What he had to say

[Chorus]
It's always too soon
It's always too fast
There'll never come a day
That you don't want 'em back
It ain't about the numbers
Chiseled in concrete
It's how they lived their lives
In the dash between
In the dash between

He was a steelworker's son
Homecoming king
He trained day and night
For that championship ring
He found him a girl
Made her his queen
And he fought for his country
And he gave it everything

[Chorus]
It's always too soon
It's always too fast
There'll never come a day
That you don't want 'em back
It ain't about the numbers
Chiseled in concrete
It's how they lived their lives
In the dash between
In the dash between

Their first breath and their last
Marks all the memories of the past
That little black line defines a legacy

It's always too soon
It's always too fast
They're always too young
It's always so sad
It ain't about the numbers
Chiseled in concrete
It's how they lived their lives
In the dash between
In the dash between
In the dash between

"The Dash" was the poem that was read at my mother's funeral. She passed away 12 years ago at the young age of 62 from overian cancer. It really isn't the date they were born. Nor is it the date they left us. It truly is the space in between that has filled us with love and tons of wonderful memories. My 31 year old son heard this song and had to call me to let me know that he heard a song about grandma. He told me that, that he never forgot that poem at grandma's funeral. This song took him back in time. I had to Google it to hear for my self. It took me back in time as well. Brought back memories of my mom's dash. It really is the dash that matters. Well done, thank you!
