Sarah Sadler – How Deep The Father's Love For Us lyrics

How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory
Behold the man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished
I will nost boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Whoever wrote "how deep the father's love for us" has a true understanding of our state before a righteous and holy god. Only a person who has despaired of bringing his own merit to god, who has realized the unplumbed depths of his own wicked heart and the impossibility of being reconciled by his own efforts; who looked away from himself to the blessed lord jesus, and has trusted in him for salvation, only such could write a hymn as this. As we consider once again the love of god, the infinite worth and value of what was accomplished on the cross by our savior, our hearts are touched, they are lifted up. We consider afresh how our lord jesus was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, how we esteemed him not. We think of how he emptied himself of all but love, suffered, bled and died on that cruel roman cross, all for us! Our hearts cry out in love to the father in praise and worship. We long for and eagerly await the coming glorious day when he shall come for us, to take us home. We marvel and wonder that scripture tells us that when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Even so, come, blessed lord jesus!
