Here we go
Round and round the floor
Together in time
Here we sit
It looks like this is it
Whatever
This time

It's making no sense
But we'll stay here till the end
Whatever
This time

They shoot horses don't they?
They shoot horses don't they?
They shoot horses don't they?

Carousel
A crazy wishing well
Whenever you fall
It seems so long
Just like a marathon
The belle of the ball

It's making no sense
But we'll stay here till the end
Whatever
This time

They shoot horses don't they?
They shoot horses don't they?
They shoot horses don't they?

The song is based on horace mccoy's novel famous for its vivid portrayal of the depression-era fad for marathon dances. The two main characters and the marathon dance are used as a metaphor for a world in which those without money and social status struggle for survival with the only certainty in life being death itself, and whose struggle becomes a vicarious entertainment for the more secure.
