(I been downhearted baby
I been down- I been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
Ever since the day we met

I been downhearted baby
I been down- I been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
Ever since the day we met)

Jan lays down and wrestles in her sleep
Moonlight spills on comic books
And superstars in magazines
An old friend calls and tells us where to meet
Her plane takes off from Baltimore
And touches down on Bourbon Street

We sit outside and argue all night long
About a god we've never seen
But never fails to side with me
Sunday comes and all the papers say
Ma Teresa's joined the mob
And happy with her full time job

Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do

(I been downhearted baby
I been down- I been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
Ever since the day we met

I been downhearted baby
I been down- I been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
Ever since the day we met)

Am I alive or thoughts that drift away?
Does summer come for everyone?
Can humans do as prophets say?
And if I die before I learn to speak
Can money pay for all the days I lived awake
But half asleep?

Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do

A life is time, they teach us growing up
The seconds ticking killed us all
A million years before the fall
You ride the waves and don't ask where they go
You swim like lions through the crest
And bathe yourself on zebra flesh

Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do
Do do do do doo do

I've been downhearted baby,
I've been downhearted baby,
Ever since the day we met
Ever since the day we met

(I've been downhearted baby
I've been down- been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met.)

Meaning for me personally: it can take years of your life (meanwhile taking years off your life) to let go of the traditions and beliefs of those that went before you. Once that is let go you are so free, mentally free, that you do all the crazy things you yourself believe in like getting on a plane fly to new orleans and sitting outside talking all night long about crazy meaningless crap . . . That once made you downhearted.

Singing about meeting someone who makes you question the bigger picture, and all the superficial stuff that ticks our life away. We wander aimlessly wondering about our purpose - should we be doing more - how do we do more - can we live up to what the wise men say.. Sure makes you downhearted. ,..

Meaning? It's more a song of feeling, like a modern-day take a walk on the wildside. I don't like the ma theresa reference either.

Please remember that tradition doesn't or won't have chains someday. The best traditions survive the test of time! Ie:turkey, dressing gravy, mashed potatoes, yams, and don't forget football!!

Doodie should only be dropped in bathrooms and not in phonebooths because of ma theresa, she will have the mob put a hit on you

I think it means live the only life you have to the fullest and not be bound by chains of tradition.
