I cannot spend another night in this home,
I close my eyes and take a breath real slow.
The consequence is if I leave I'm alone,
But what's the difference when you beg for love

As I run through glass in the street,
Kerosene hearts,
Carry the name that my father gave me
And take the face of the world

'Cause this is a wasteland, my only retreat!
With heaven above you, there's hell over me

I met a girl who never looked so alone,
Like sugar water in your mouth lukewarm.
She tied a cherry stem for me with her tongue,
We fell in love and now we're both alone.

'Cause I don't need any more friends
Another kiss like a fire on pavement,
We'll burn it down till the end

Oh, oh
This is a wasteland, my only retreat!
With heaven above you, there's hell over me.
The water is rusted, the air is unclean
And there for a second I feel free.
This is a wasteland, my only retreat

I waited all this night to honor you and say
"I know it's hard, but who are you to fall apart on me?!"

This is a wasteland, my only retreat!
With heaven above you, there's hell over me

'Cause this is a wasteland, my only retreat!
With heaven above you, there's hell over me.
You said "What about us?" Well, what about me?
Hang from the gallows asleep in the rain.
'Cause This is a wasteland, my only retreat

Paralyze me!
Don't let me, jump don't let me fall!

"i wrote this song for all of our fans who feel like they don't have a home or a place that they don't fit in. It was all inspired by the letters, messages, and conversations that we've had with them over the last couple of years. In the chorus i say 'this is a wasteland, my only retreat. ' i am referring to the shows that we play as a temporary home for those who need it. It may not be much, but at least it's a place where we can forget about our problems for a little while"

When heaven is above that one person who made your life horrible heaven instantly becomes hell to you. The retreat is their concerts. A temporary home for the fans. A wasteland to get away from reality. When he says he doesn't need anymore friends, he's saying that the friends he has is fine with him. They make him happy. What he has is good enough for him. The water is rising, the air is unclean. Depression is like drowning. Or like the air you're breathing becoming un-safe to breathe because it only hurts you every time you breathe. Hell Above has many different meanings, but they are good meanings. But it's only my opinion.

I always visualize what I think the song is about. With this one I see a boy who is getting abused, and run away. Only the streets is where he feels home. The people who makes his life a livin' hell at school, find him make it only worse. When his parents find him again, they say "What about us, do you not care what happens with us?" After that he can't take it anymore, he wants to kill himself by jump off a bridge. But he doesn't dare, he begs God to paralyze him, so he doesn't feel that he dies.
This song really wants me to go cuddle up in a corner and cry for 3 hours straight, even though my life isn't crappy.

The retreat they're referring to in the song is their shows, like hell above meaning your problems will follow you everywhere but when you're at your retreat you feel at peace. And the shows in this song is the retreat "The water is rusted, the air is unclean and there for a second I feel free cause this a wasteland my only retreat" He's saying, when you're at his show, it's like you can just forget about all the problems you have going on, and you can just be free. Which is one hundred percent true. I've been to like three of their concerts, and no matter how depressed or shy I am I'm free there, and all my problems disappear for that moment in time, and it's amazing and that's like the main reason I like bands like this. But anyway this song is just saying that the concerts are retreats for you.

Hell above to me is a very personal song. It's the kind of song that just makes me feel like i can breath in this world and that im not always alone. I think that's what vic wanted to give out in this song, to give all his fans hope from all the crazy stuff that's going on, to give them their "only retreat" from this messed up world
