Christine: Little Lotte thought of everything and nothing.
Her father promised her that he would send her the Angel of Music.
Her father promised her...
Her father promised her...

You were once my one companion,
You were all that mattered.
You were once a friend and father,
Then my world was shattered.

Wishing you were somehow here again,
Wishing you were somehow near.
Sometimes it seemed if I just dreamed,
Somehow you would be here.

Wishing I could hear your voice again,
Knowing that I never would.
Dreaming of you won't help me to do,
All that you dreamed I could!

Passing bells and sculpted angels,
Cold and monumental.
Seem, for you, the wrong companions,
You were warm and gentle.

Too many years fighting back tears,
Why can't the past just die!

Wishing you were somehow here again,
Knowing we must say goodbye!
Try to forgive, teach me to live!
Give me the strength to try!

No more memories, no more silent tears!
No more gazing across the wasted years!
Help me say goodbye
Help me say goodbye...

Christine is young and confused. The only person who she feels that she can trust is her father. Even though he's not alive, she feels a connection to him especially since she thinks that he sent her an "angel". She struggles with the fact that their are two men in her life which she loves dearly.

Christine is singing this song about her late father, the only family she ever knew. She loved him dearly and the memory of him and his death still haunts her many years later. In this song she is expressing how she still misses him, but wants it to not go with her everywhere anymore. Near to the end of the song she says that she wants help to say good bye. She wants to get over his death and move forward, not go on wasting her life over his death, because she knows that isn't what he wanted for her.

It's even more simple if you've been watching/following the original stage play since the 1980's...

However, she was initally saying she wishes he was still with her because she is torn with decision and opportunties. She is wishing for his guidance again. But yes, there is some angst and grief within her song as well. One of my favorite songs from the production.

Ok ok here I am again saying SIMPLE IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE! She is singing about her father and how it hurt her so much that he had died.
