She's mostly gone
Some other place
I'm getting by
In other ways
Everything they whispered in our ear
Is coming true
Try to justify the things
I used to do
Believe in you

Watching you drown
I'll follow you down
And I am here right beside you
The lights in the sky
Have finally arrived
I am staying right beside you

I tried to stay away
You know
Just in case
I've come to realize
We all have our place
Time has a way you know
To make it clear
I have my role in this
I can't disappear
Or leave you here

Watching you drown
I'll follow you down
And I am here right beside you
The lights in the sky
Are waving goodbye
I am staying right beside you

Don't disregard the fact that nin (especially later albums) play esoteric themes inter-weaved with what might be seemingly personal experiences (capital g). But i feel like the lyrical content of this particular song regards the prophecy of the gods that come back to earth and leave. (mayan, aztec, sumerian, etc). I'll leave you a clue... "maitreya", but not the buddhist one.

Not all songs have a specific meaning. The song is about watching someone or something you love go down and going down with it because you love them or it to much to walk away.

We could speculate all day about it but really you'd have to ask Trent what inspired him to write this.

it can probably be applied to multiple situations, I take it as having a girlfriend thats hooked on drugs, that he used to use with, he feels guilty, and loves her and wants her to be clean, possibly because thats what my situation is?

This may or may not be politically charged, but I love the imagery. I think it is someone drowning and so he decides to stay with them as they sink. The lights in the sky seem to be stars that they can see over the last few minutes.

I think this whole album is politically charged like alot of his work lately, and I believe the she Trent is talking about is America. Instead of just blaming America like he usually does for it's own downfalls, this sounds like him taking responsiblity and embracing America, even as we're spiraling out of control. I don't know exactly what the lights in the sky are however, they may be heaven, bombs, angels, I really don't know.
