How I got to understand freedom of speech was truly dead

I had a clear idea of what this song meant before I read other comments from people who contacted me, now I am not so sure. They mentioned a man being in an asylum, or even 1984 of George Orwell. Well, I will still share with you what my first impression was and what I felt like writing right after reading the lyrics (yes, I am insane, yes, I am suicidal, and from comments I read, I gather that this is exactly where Trent Reznor was when he wrote that song):

Do you know Nine Inch Nails? Trent Reznor? I saw them live in Brixton London last year, it was impressive. If there is one band beyond that freedom of speech bullshit, it is Nine Inch Nails.

It is so crude, it is so direct, so cathartic, there is nothing else on this planet that could give it to you just like Nine Inch Nails can. I mentioned them everywhere, in books I have written years ago and that got published in France, meaning nothing to any French reader, and yet, I felt the need to tell the whole world about NIN, as if somehow it was just an extension of myself. What I am, what I aspire to be, this is it, that cathartic.

In 2005 came that song, Every Day Is Exactly The Same, the best song NIN ever did, so deep, so significant, it signifies the death of free speech. Because, dear me, if even Trent Reznor cannot express himself, and has to use tricks to make us understand his true meaning, then, we are all lost, freedom of speech is truly dead.

I bought the CD “With Teeth” in Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, when I was living there two years ago. I cannot believe it took me that long to finally appreciate its true significance, as it is illuminating.

When my own personal hero, tells me, that he is no longer capable of telling me what he really feels inside, what he really thinks, then, is there still a purpose to this existence?

I need an escape from reality, he is supposed to provide it for me. By being extreme, more extreme that I could ever dream to be. And now he is telling me that they got to him and that he can no longer do so. I am now left to my own fate.

A miracle! Simply a miracle that such a hidden message, could be embedded within such an album as “With Teeth”. Such a great song, their best ever, and so, you would have to pay attention. I certainly paid attention, and researched those lyrics, because frankly, I could not have figured it out from listening to the song.

It was hidden indeed, but here are the words. They are unmistakable, you cannot misunderstand this. There is no more freedom of speech in this world. Not even from Nine Inch Nails or Trent Reznor. It has really just finished me.

I just don’t know what to do, what to think. I don’t know even if I can still say anything in this world. Can I? Will you let me? Will you listen to me? Where are those threats? Will it get to threaten me as well? When, how, who?

Well, as astonishing as this can be, that Nine Inch Nails, that Trent Reznor, can no longer feel free to speak, I feel free to say whatever I want, and I certainly, will say, whatever I want!

I do not care to be shot, threaten, mishandled, or criticised. I have nothing to lose, because I am nothing. I am not an industry all unto myself. I live beyond everything, because I am so disgusted by everything, that departing this life would be welcomed.

I am electrified! That even my dearest hero can no longer speak, as freedom of speech is dead! Well, I am not dead! I will continue to speak for everyone else. I will speak whatever I want, whenever I want, until I get shot! And I don’t care! Because you have made this life such a living hell, no one in their right mind would wish to be alive in this world in the first place!

No one will threaten me. There is still a freedom of speech in this world, for as long as I live.
