There's spring in the air
They're sweeping the streets
Wind is a breeze
The sun becomes her he agrees

What's holding up her face?
Nothing but blue skies
Passage ways to windows
That don't close

Where do you live?
Love is a place
Where are you from?
She says, ask yourself ask anyone

What's holding up her face
Nothing but blue skies
Passage ways the mind's eye
Contemplates

“They’re sweeping the streets. Wind is a breeze“.

First off, this song is amazing.
Not only Because Emily Haines’ voice is a hauntingly sad whisper, but because the lyrics twist around your soul to the beat of a simplistic melody tapering off into an almost short lived two minutes and change.
Every time I replay this song ( it’s often folks.) I’m taken back to a story of two people, drifting apart until absolutely nothing makes the other happy referred to in the shifting winds and streets swept up in the commotion of adolescent love. I can imagine the protagonist leaving the comfort of her suburban life to get away from the constant reminders of things spoken between lovers.
“the sun becomes her, he agrees.”

“Love is a place. Where are you from?” sounds like a conversation the heartbroken share in a dingy bar before the inevitable empty night of relations. In my mind’s eye I can almost imagine what the mystery man would look like, but he’s so unimportant to the narrator that she can’t even be bothered to answer his question fully.
Instead “she says, ask yourself, ask anyone.”
Emily sings the line mournfully, while her character keeps it together if only for a moment longer.
    “Nothing but blue skies.”

The end of this song leaves me wondering. What happened to this person?
    “Contemplates”
Did she fill her void? Is she willing to change?
Brilliantly, Emily left us with the bittersweet reminder that art imitates life, and in the end sometimes our thoughts …our regrets… our painfully raw memories… are the only things left when the curtain is drawn.
