Katy Perry – The One That Got Away lyrics

Summer after high school when we first met
We make-out in your Mustang to Radiohead
And on my 18th Birthday
We got matching tattoos

Used to
steal your parents' liquor
And climb to the roof
Talk about our future
Like we had a clue
Never planned
that one day
I'd be losing you

In another life
I would be your girl
We keep all our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away

I was June
and you were my Johnny Cash
Never one without the other
We made a pact
Sometimes when I miss you
I put those records on (whoa)

Someone said you had your tattoo removed
Saw you downtown singing the Blues
It's time to face the music
I'm no longer your muse

But in another life
I
would be your girl
We keep all our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away
The one(X3)
The one that got away

Bridge:
All this money can't buy me a time machine (No)

Can't replace you with a million rings (No)
I shoulda told you what you meant to me (Whoa)
Cause now I pay the price

In another life
I would be your girl
We keep all
our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away
The one(X3)

In another life
I would make you stay
So I
don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away

I think it means that the guy told her that they would be together forever bu tchanged his mind without telling her but showing her and she is trying to get over it by tell herslef that in the next life he is going to be mine no matter what and that she wont let him go even if she ends up dieing for him. It mainly about true love no one can replace that and I no exactly how that feels me and my boyfriend have been together since like 5th grade and we are still together after 6 1/2 years.

This song's about a regret of the other in a relationship that "could've been" and work well in the future.
"The one that got away" simply put, is a person you would always compare to with another in the future. They changed your life in a way you can never imagine, and that you will always compare them to your new partners unconsciously. They left you a big scar, perhaps of hurt and regret. Hurt because maybe they have hurted you unintentionally and you felt deeply hurt because you actually love them, and regret because they actually could be "the one", and you let them slip through your grasp just because of your instinct of not seeing you two in the long term. They could also be the best one you've ever had and you finally come to terms that you're an idiot for letting them go just because of irrational uncertainty where they've been all you ever needed, and they were right in front of you after all this time and now you have to pray the price of letting go of a precious diamond, dwelling up in your "could be"s and "what if"s.

This song is difficult to understand until you have a little bit of background information. It is based on the story of a ukranian serial killer who, despite killing over fifty people, was haunted by the missed opportunity of his first near-victim, his high school girlfriend. Written from alternating perspectives, we see his ex-girlfriend feeling sorrow over no longer being with him alongside the killer himself wishing he could go back in time and not allow her to escape unharmed from his grasp.
Despite a somewhat obscure background, this song teaches us that no matter what our goals, it always ends in sadness and crushing regret over perceived mistakes. Even people who seem to act with no concern for the well-being of themselves or others end up feeling this inescapable despair.

Verse three says that she's famous now, making slot of money, but no amount of anything could replace how she feels for him, and she can't go back in time to fix what she regrets doing. It also gives another hint as to what happened: "i shouldve told you what you meant to me; cause now i've paid the price" means that she shouldve, when he told her that he didn't want to be with her, said that he meant slot to her, and maybe he wouldve stayed, but she didn't and now shell have to pay the consequences.

This song is about your first love. It starts with how good the relationship was. The first verse is about good moments they had together. The chorus is about the break up and what could have been. The second verse is about the guy moving on and her realizing she wont ever be his anymore. The bridge is about how nothing can replace what he meant to her, but because she didn't stop him from leaving now she has to pay the price. It is a very heartbreaking song.
