James Blunt – Goodbye My Lover lyrics

Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blind and I knew I had won.
So I took what's mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I've kissed your lips and held your head.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

I am a dreamer and when I wake,
You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile.
I've watched you sleeping for a while.
I'd be the father of your child.
I'd spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We've had our doubts but now we're fine,
And I love you, I swear that's true.
I cannot live without you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

And I still hold your hand in mine.
In mine when I'm asleep.
And I will bear my soul in time,
When I'm kneeling at your feet.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.

Why hasn't anyone considered that this woman has passed on? This has to be the saddest song of all time when taken in that context. To me, this is a song about a man who is grieving for a woman taken from this life (and from him) too early. Notice he only holds her hand in his dreams. That is all that is left to him. He will bear (should be bare) his soul when he is kneeling at her feet. Doesn't this sound like something you might do in the next life?

This song reflects on feeling guilty. This guy is so guilty he feels he is the reason for his girlfreind leaving him. But honestly the girl who leaves doesn't know that she is the one for him. He wants her to remember him. He loves her. He can't live without her. His heart fills with sadness. He stills hold her hand in his. He is more than just a girl to him, he is her lover and freind. He says he is so hollow.

I feel like this is a song about a divorced woman with a child.
He met her and eventhough he knew they can't be together he still gone out with her for some time.
But then came the day where he felt he couldn't do that anymore so he broke up with her and let her know in this song that she means the world for him and that the day will come when he will feel ready and marry her.

A man who met a woman and fell in love with her. His guilt is that he gone out with her even though he knew it was gonna come to an end. He thinks so because he was taken already but he can't stop loving her. He will always love her and she will always love him.

Yeah, but why? There is no signs/no word of that. Of course that does not exclude this "unfaithful" theory. I'd say she is simply leaving him - cause perhaps she's now looking for "real love" and not just "eternal right" of receiving love. Yeah, maybe she found her love.
Actually it's not said anywhere that maybe he dumps her. As I know this is about Blunts personal life and he is just interpreting what he has done to some girl. But as J. Blunt has stated this song is very heart-rending to him and so he should then be feeling guilty and not stating a question of that. But the song might be a way of making himself feel better thus - he makes a question.
But this is just a small theory.
Jkbwolf wrote that "he"(J. Blunt himself I assume) had been divorced by his wife. If that is true then it's all much clearer to me.
    Any thoughts anyone?
