The king is dead
No doubt about it
We came a long way
Just to say goodbye
And in the end
It was some old swansong
The king is dead
You'd never know it
But we got pictures
Of a different man
He's flesh and blood
No-one knows all the answers
Some days we just do the best we can
You changed my mind in a minute
It breaks my heart to admit it
Don't make me say...
The king is dead
The show is over
We came a long way
Just to turn around
Lesson learned
No-one knows all the answers
Some days we just do the best we can
You changed my mind in a minute
It breaks my heart to admit it
Don't make me say...
You let me in behind the lies
But you're no use to me lifesize
No-one's to blame
I think this song is about meeting your idols, whether they're musicians, actors etc and realising the person behind the facade " but we got pictures of a different man" is not necessarily as fantastic as you built them up to be ..."you let me in behind the lies, but you're no use to me lifesize"
Sounds like a tribute to Elvis Presley, "the king" of
rock and roll, who died 10 years before this song first
played on the radio. Even then (1987) many people thought
Elvis was still alive--a claim the first two lines of this
song labors to contradict. Lines 3 & 4 may be describing
a pilgrimage to Graceland, photo souveniers, and contemplation
of the uncertain circumstances surrounding Elvis' death.
Rest of the song, especially the refrain, doesn't seem to
fit, though. Maybe it's not about Elvis Presley after all.
