He said I'll love you til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
I watched the years pass slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind
He kept her pictures on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
But he still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again
They found love letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/g/george_jones/he_stopped_loving_her_today.html ]
I went to see my friend today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
He was all dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
Soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today
You know she came to see him one last time
Oh, we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
Well, this time he's over her for good
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today
This guy was so in love he couldn't live with out the woman who'd left him. He killed himself so he could stop loving her.

The first line of the song gives the gest of the song. "he said he'd love her til he dies. " i believe he meant it. This is a description of real true love. Even though they spent years apart, he loved her all through that time until he died.

I have always said some people really and truly do die of a broken heart
I have loved this song thru the years ,but seems i mainly play during feelings of melancoly or deep sadness and aloneness.
He was happy once again , and released of the greatest pain known to man.
