I've been searching
For a pot of gold
Like the kind you find
At the end of the Rainbow
I've been dreaming
Thought it was in vain
Ah but now you're here
Can't believe that you're back again
Now I know I can't lose
As long as you follow
I'm gonna win (I'm gonna win)
I'm gonna beg, steal, or borrow
As long as you follow
I've been wandering
Gone away too far
But the road was rough
To get back where you are [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/f/fleetwood_mac/as_long_as_you_follow.html ]
And the sun went down
It never seemed to rise
Ah but now you're here
With the light shining in your eyes
Now I know I can't lose
As long as you follow
I'm gonna win (I'm gonna win)
I'm gonna beg, steal, or borrow
Yes I can live today
If you give me tomorrow
As long as you follow
Now I know I can't lose
As long as you follow
I'm gonna win (I'm gonna win)
I'm gonna beg, steal, or borrow
Yes I can live today
If you give me tomorrow
As long as you follow
As long as you follow (as long as you follow)
As long as you follow (as long as you follow)
As long as you follow (as long as you follow)
As long as you follow (as long as you follow)
I think this song is about an ongoing, unhealthy relationship between 2 people. The speaker is a self-centred sole (incapable of real/true love) who wants the ex-partner only as long as they can't have them. When the ex-partner comes back (giving them reassurance that they'll always be there for them (tomorrows), giving them a consistent back-up plan if all else fails) they find that they can function and get on with life and continue to look for that next best thing (rather than loving them back). They're malignantly selfish - not giving to that partner who is loving and wanting them - rather they'll beg, steal and borrow from them... Use them, until something better comes along, which it never does... So the cycle continues. He/she knows its wrong, but doesn't know how to stop it 'cause they don't know how to love. He/she is constantly on the look out for that 'pot of gold' at the 'end of the rainbow'... The greener grass... Ie: looking for a relationship/person that they know deep down doesn't exist but can't help it... Forever looking over the shoulder of a decent, loving partner who is there waiting to be loved. When that back-up plan leaves/disappears... He/she falls into depression (the road was rough when they were gone, and they realized that they need that person - they have doubts/regrets about letting them go... Wanting them back. Low and behold.. They do come back/follow (cant believe youre back again for more mistreatment)... At which time they're devalued all over again (the person has what they want) and the emotional abuse continues (they're forever there for them and because of this... Will always be the loser/hurt/unloved... He/she always wins and feels good so long as this keeps happening). He/she wants them there for their tomorrows, but that's it... Just so they know they're there just in case. This makes them feel good about themselves, so they don't feel bad/sad/lonely and can get on with their todays (but they'll give nothing in return... Only steal/borrow) they know the other person deserves so much better, but can't help themselves. The cycle continues, so long as they follow... The partner is damned either way... They'll never be truly loved. Ie. So long as you let me (so long as you follow me) - i'll just use and abuse your loyalty but want you when you disappear... I'm miserable when you're not there... Because i need you to function today... So long as i know you're there for tomorrow (ie. Just in case). Think that makes sense. A totally futile/doomed relationship... Not worth the heartache... >!
