This song (released in 1982), is partly about Christine's hopeless love affair that began in 1979 (while making the Tusk album), with as she described, "the multifaceted jewel (Dennis Wilson), who threw me into the deep end, literally and figuratively." The couple didn't part on amicable terms and had not seen each other for about two years. Unwittingly, the song describes the coincidental emotions that both McVie and Wilson were experiencing from 1981 to 1983.
Each moment is a memory
Time is so unkind
Every hour filled with an emptiness
I can't hide
Oh, there's distance between us
Can't get you off of my mind
As I lay here in the darkness
I can't find no peace inside
Interestingly, a year later after the song was released as a single, Wilson drowned at Marina Del Ray, Los Angeles, shortly after his
39th birthday. On the day of his death in 1983, Wilson was quoted as saying (as if from the 2nd verse), "I'm lonesome. I'm lonesome all the time."
There's a rain on my window
And I can count the drops
But I can't help feeling lonely
There's no way, no way that I could stop
Knowing a bit of the story from behind the scenes can change the feel of a song from what one might have had at first. Someone who's paid plenty of dues in the love department of life and is still wishing and perhaps willing to pay some more for someone who has paid even more than they have in the love department of life may seem a bit ridiculous to some of us. Some folks can handle loneliness better than others. Still others keeping searching in hope of finding that special someone. Does anyone know if eHarmony.com really works?
