Bixby Canyon Bridge lyrics

Songwriters: Gibbard, Benjamin; Harmer, Nicholas; Mcgerr, Jason; Walla, Christopher

I descended a dusty gravel ridge
Beneath the Bixby Canyon Bridge
Until I eventually arrived
At the place where your soul had died.

Barefoot in the shallow creek,
I grabbed some stones from underneath
And waited for you to speak to me.

And the silence; it became so very clear
That you had long ago disappeared.
I cursed myself for being surprised
That this didn't play like it did in my mind.

All the way from San Francisco
As I chased the end of your road
Cause I've still got miles to go.

And I want to know my fate
If I keep up this way.

And it's hard to want to stay awake
When everyone you need, they all seem to be asleep.
And you wonder if you missed your dream.

You can't see a dream
You can't see a dream.
You just can't see a dream.

And then it started getting dark.
I trudged back to where the car was parked
No closer to any kind of truth
As I must assume was the case with you.

Is it a suicide? Off a bridge seems like somewhere u would kill yourself and the final lines about the person he sing of being no closer to any kind of truth back this up. Perhaps he thought he would get closure by visiting the spot where it happened but realised that reality does not work like that, in the present moment found it just to be a normal stream but in this lack of signficance he tries to empathise with the person whose life had lost meaning when they had killed themselves... maybe!

Sounds like the person in the song is looking for the spirit of someone dear to them who had died there; probably a lost love, since DCFC is infamous for "Anabelle Lee" (a poem by Edgar Allen Poe; Google it) type songs, where a love dies or is in the shadow of death. It's sort of like he's depressed about it and knows he needs to stop looking but can't. The dream part refers to dreaming about times with the person. He thinks there's still hope when he goes back to the car, but not in that place. The whole song sounds to me like mourning a lost love. I could be wrong, not so sure, this is just a guess.
