Cage The Elephant – Back Against The Wall lyrics

Tonight I'll have a look
And try to find my face again
Buried beneath this house
My spirit screams and dies again
Out back a monster wears a cloak of Persian leather
Behind the tv screen
I've fallen to my knees

I said you got me where you want me again
And I can't turn away
I'm hanging by thread and I'm feelin' like a fool
I'm stuck here in-between
The shadows of my yesterday
I want to get away
I need to get away

Blanket of silence
Makes me want to sink my teeth in deep
Burn all the evidence
A fabricated disbelief
Pull back the curtains
Took a look into your eyes
My tongue has now become
A platform for your lies

I said you got me where you want me again
And I can't turn away
I'm hanging by thread and I'm feelin' like a fool
I'm stuck here in-between
The shadows of my yesterday
I want to get away
I need to get away

Now you know
Yeah you got my back against the wall
Oh god
I ain't got no other place to hide
Chained down
Like a sittin' duck just waitin' for the fall
You know
Yeah you got my back against the wall

Deep in the jungle
Camouflaged by all the fallen leaves
A hand holds up the sky
While shamefully I make my plea
The alters callin'
But my legs won't seem to stand
Guess I'm a coward
Scared to face the man I am

I said you got me where you want me again
And I can't turn away
I'm hanging by thread and I'm feelin' like a fool
I'm stuck here in-between
The shadows of my yesterday
I want to get away
I need to get away

Now you know
Yeah you got my back against the wall
Oh god
I ain't got no other place to hide
Chained down
Like a sittin' duck just waitin' for the fall
You know
Yeah you got my back against the wall

Now you know
Yeah you got my back against the wall
Oh god
I ain't got no other place to hide
Chained down
Like a sittin' duck just waitin' for the fall
You know
Yeah you got my back against the wall

This song is about how today kids behind tv and computers have no personality and they forgetting who they are, this makes brain stopping and they really hard to connect again with people. Spirit screams and trying to be socialized but power of technology win them and 'they dies again\'.
' tonight i'll have a look and try to find my face again, buried beneath this house, my spirit screams and dies again, out back a monster wears a cloack of persian leather, behind the tv screen, i'v fallen to my knees.
    This is my imagine.

I think the first part aout his soul is about being trapped in his house or even postion in life and how it's killing his will to live.
The monster in leather might be talking about how money corrupts people.
I think it is about balancing who you are (scared to face the man I am) who you used to be (shadows of my yesterday) and who he needs to be/ is supposed to be. I think his back is against the wall because of himself vs someone else. Some sort of decision maybe. Or maybe it is someone else like an old love hes gotten back together with who is bad news. Lots of interpretation and symbolism. I think maybe hes contemplating suicide.

Most of the album (except for "in one ear" and perhaps "judas") is about change, relations between the past and present in particular. This song in about fear of the past catching up with you, trying to forget it- "burn all the evidence of fabricated disbelief", "want to get away, i need to get away". He wants to burn down his past, start over, get as far away from his past as he possibly could- "i'm stuck in right between the shadows of my yesterday".
He fails in the end- hence the title and the chorus. Think about it.

The song could apply to a number of scenarios I don't believe it is meant to apply to just one scenario but have a general idea that many people can relate to. The song revolves around the idea of feeling trapped and others are manipulating you. Some main scenarios this could apply to include a girlfriend, a job, an addiction, or just life. I think the song is either directed towards a specific person or god asking why they were put in this situation.
