They say you are right
I hope that I'm wrong
I know that you tried
But still it is gone
Just don't you lose hope
I swear I'd never dream that we're alone
But don't you let go
I swear I still believe though I don't know
Remember the years
I still walk tall
I only fear
Now I only crawl
How could I be wrong?
I hope there comes a day your fear is gone
How could we be lost?
Lost just cease to be not carry on
Into the light may you fall
Into the light may you follow
Into the light may you know
Truth alone [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/alter_bridge/words_darker_than_their_wings.html ]
Into the light may you fall
Into the light may you follow
Into the light may you know
Truth alone
Truth alone
You can love some God
Go never to ask why
Or to fear again
Go find your peace tonight
Go set out towards the Sun
Let the view begin
Go soon your day will come
Day will come
Into the light may you fall
Into the light may you follow
Into the light may you know
Truth alone
Into the light may you fall
Into the light may you follow
Into the light may you know
Truth alone
Truth alone
Truth alone
Truth alone
Truth alone

I dont think mark has doubt. Saying "how could i be wrong? " is more of a rhetorical question. Saying "... Though i dont know" doesnt suggest doubt either. It just means because he hasnt died yet it's not 100% persuasion.

From my point of view, myles and mark are having a chat about hope and belief in the first verse.
In the second verse i think myles is clearly stating that you just have to live your life, if there is a god or not.
The light in this song is somewhat your own opinion about god, for you'll fall, follow and know your own belief, whether it's right or wrong; the only truth that you create.

Myles said in an interview that the entire album is to do with a person who is having trouble with their faith so this song is probably showing how this person still has doubts despite having an entire album written about them. Although it could be seen as how modern day society battles with itself over whether there is a god or we just die and then there is nothing so there isn't much point living in the first place
Milosalterbridge701, as for the stanza of the song that doesn't seem to make sense, i had a suggestion. "you can love someone... " - is in an entirely different tone from the rest of the stanza and it is sun only by myles. I think it stands as it's own idea, and that idea belonging to myles: that one can be good without being a person of faith. We both agree that a theme of this song is that the singers try to get the other to see from his point of view. I think what is trying to be said here is "mark, you don't need religion to be a good person - to do the things held as virtuous and kind, such as love. See from my point of view, part of that being that religion is unnecessary to live a good life. "
"go never to ask why, or to fear again" - this lyric leaves me with the impression of "ignorance is bliss" (i also feel that myles is speaking this part of the song). Now, we're going to go slightly into my life, but it'll be quick and it has a purpose. I'm an atheist, my family is devoutly religious. I was religious, like them, but i found that i could not remain that way when i found what i perceive to be contradictions in the religion. When i spoke to my older relatives, and, later on, a priest, their arguments were the same - "yes, you're correct, but you should ignore this. Would you rather be bothered be this "contradiction or believe happily? (this is almost exactly what the priest told me. )" i'm under the impression that myles had a similar experience when he lost faith and that he is simply stressing his frustration and despair over the fact that his search for answers to questions he had about his religion (i'm assuming now that he asked questions before he decided to leave) were met by "wouldn't you rather leave your questions and carry on happily? "would you rather go never to ask why" and be untroubled, "or to fear again" and be haunted by your questions. Now, on to why mark is also singing this part of the song, and by extension expressing this idea to a certain level. He before states that he too has his doubts about faith, but carries on anyway (as i was suggested to do). I believe mark wants myles to look past his doubts and embrace faith.
I'm going to take a crack at analyzing what these lyrics mean. I titled each verse with who sings it just to make things clear. My commentary is italicized.
Myles:
they say you are right - the general majority of people have faith, they agree with mark
i hope that i'm wrong - he still hopes there is a god out there
i know that you tried
but still it is gone - he knows that mark has tried to restore his faith but is still gone
Mark:
just don't you lose hope - don't lose hope, you can find faith again
i swear i've never dreamed that we're alone - the choice of the phrase "i swear" is interesting. I think mark harbors some doubts as well. He is somewhat defensive about the possible absence of god. But don't you let go
i swear i still believe though i don't know - he admits he doesn't know and yet he still believes, again the "i swear" part comes up, i feel like mark is speaking to himself here just as much as he is to myles. Probably in these discussions, mark realized he doesn't know if god exists, he is swearing to himself that he still believes but he has some doubts.
Myles:
remember the years
i still walked tall - remember when he had faith and he was happy, proud, excited to meet life
i only fear - now he fears things like death because he doubts the existence of heaven
now i only crawl - he's ashamed and full of doubts, he crawls through life trapped in fear
Mark:
how could i be wrong? - mark has doubts as well. If he's the one that is happy though, how can he be wrong? I hope there comes a day your fear is gone
how could we be lost? - mark cannot even consider myles' viewpoints. He can't accept the idea that we may be lost/alone. Lost just cease to be not carry on - he can't believe that we may die and just... Die.
Myles and mark:
into the light may you fall
into the light may you follow
into the light may you know
truth alone - this chorus is genius. The duet here is crazy. Even though their opinions are far way from each other, they both express the same desire. They both want the other to understand them and find the truth.
Into the light may you fall
into the light may you follow
into the light may you know
truth alone
Myles:
you can love someone - this seems a little out of place but it must have some kind of significance.
Myles and mark:
again, we have them singing together, both expressing similar desires from two different perspectives, very smart
go never to ask why - this part stumps me a bit, why would they not want each other to ask why? Or to fear again
go find your peace tonight
go set out towards the sun - both of them want each other to find peace and knowledge
let the new begin - let your new life of peace begin
go soon your day will come - soon you will come to understand
Myles and mark:
into the light may you fall
into the light may you follow
into the light may you know
truth alone
Into the light may you fall
into the light may you follow
into the light may you know
truth alone
truth alone
Truth alone
truth alone
In summation, i think this song is less about whether or not god exists, but in finding peace and harmony with whatever your beliefs are. We all encounter doubts during our lives but we can't let that disrupt our happiness. We can believe what we want and we should be happy with our decisions. Despite what anyone says, believe in what you believe, and find peace.
My thoughts about the meaning of words darker than their wings are... It's a conversation on faith vs doubt. Myles is a hopeless man in this song. And mark is the one who believes, even though he has doubt himself. But the moral is to keep faith, even though everything seems dark and lost in faith and that the light is still upon us, that we can still follow it and begin the new after darkness. So, words darker than their wings is like a conversation of the bright and the dark. And in the end it's like they both just believe in the light and truth alone it's amazing! It makes sense, perfectly... And i also think that the lyrics "into the light may you fall... Follow... Know truth alone" is almost a call-out to those who accept blind faith (a.k. A. Believing without seeing). The "truth alone" part, to me, seems to be myles's hope that--regardless of how we get there--we can all eventually stumble across our own truth rather than simply believing everything we're told without further investigation.
