Sorry, Bombchu Link, but I have to disagree. I feel that this is referring to the fact that Sonic had to fight against the combined abilities of his comrades in Metal Sonic. Even enemies he had defeated earlier in the series (Chaos, for example as Eggman had mentioned) had been copied and Sonic must have recognized it, along with his friend's powers.
