I think that since the song is sung to ONE child, and the next verse talks about being set FREE, that the meaning of "your mama's good looking and papa is rich", is because the mother is a slave and the father is a rich white man who takes what he wants. So even though the child is being taken care of now, it is still considered a "slave" and therefore hopefully will be set free "One of these days".
