I truly believe that Neil Diamond, suffering from some kind of severe depression at that time (1972), was referring to himself -- in fear of dying as an old man, with nobody caring whether he lived or died. The table (signed "For My Children") may be seen as an allegorical symbol for his gift to the world (his music, intended for everyone's enjoyment -- his "children") -- afraid that no one would care if he died, or what he left for us. I think a great many of us have had that fear (myself, for instance) at some time or other. And while I'm not in the record business myself, I still try to serve and bless the lives of people in general, so that I can be remembered in a positive way -- living or dead.
