This in fact is not a Madonna song, but rather a song she wrote with her collaborator Pat Leonard and then offered British model-turned-singer Nick Kamen. The song was a major hit in Europe and Madonna can be heard on background vocals in Kamen's single. There is a bottleg version with Madonna singing the full song, this I think was part of the "True Blue" algum sessions and the song never really made the cut. Lyrically, it's interesting how it went from a female to a male interpretation with no real change. The line "a little voice inside me cries" sounds quite feminine, but otherwise it is perfectly interchangeable.

Feels so good inside
This is probably one of the lines that got the Parent's Associations in the us all fired up about the song's lyrics. Today it sounds rather tame, although in 1984 it was still considered racy for a girl to talk about how she feels about s**.

What was scared and cold
Some people see this as a reference to the girl in the song being frigid, i.e. unable to feel sexual pleasure until the moment she meets the man of her dreams who turns her into a 'real' woman.

Been saving it all for you
This is probably one of the most puzzling lines in this song. She told us before that she's been had, so what exactly is she saving? Certainly not her body, so it has to be her heart. Still, really nice the way the authors play with our expectations.

When your heart beats (after first time, with your heartbeat)
Next to mine
This is a rather romantic way of describing s** with this man whom she has fallen in love with. They're bodies are so close that she can feel his heart beating close to hers.

Id been had
As in the first verse of the song, Madonna here reinforces the idea that she had many lovers but they meant nothing to her.

I made it through the wilderness
By wilderness, Madonna means her past life as a promiscuous girl, changing lovers all the time. She survived that period and now she is ready to start anew.

Meaning
The song is one of the most ironic takes on 80's consumerism. Madonna takes on the role of a girl whose only interest - or obsession - are her material possessions. It is also tongue in cheek, with lines like "if they can't raise my interest" and "boys may come" full of sexual innuendo. To some extent, there are also feminist undertones, since the girl in question seems to be much smarter than all the boys who chase her. Unfortunately, the song's irony was completely misunderstood in America, where Madonna is known as the "material girl" up to this day, as if the song represented her life philosophy.
