It sounds like he has fallen for someone who has givin up on themself. Hence the (Here I am expecting just a little bit a little too much from the wounded) people who have self hatred tend to live in a different world than the rest of us they can't love you because your not really there. But that's the powerful thing about songs we use them as our crutch therefor they become the meaning of what we need at the moment.
