This song is about the dying of Aussie mateship, of caring for each other, and of caring for Australia. In a confronting and caring, yet uncertain hope, John Williamson questions each of us to look after the load, to hold it together with any makeshift means, of "wire", just to get through, if that's what's needed to restore us as a nation. We had the right way of caring for each other in the 1930's to early 1960's, and this resulted in us building up acaring for Australia as a whole.
