Having been on both sides of this, I think it's about the struggles of dads and sons to communicate. The son feels like the dad is trying to tell him what to do, and the dad feels like he won't listen. It's like the old saying, "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years." Dads do have a lot of wisdom, but sometimes their methods of communicating come off as preaching. I also think dads want to make their sons lives easier, so they don't make the same mistakes they did, but some times the son just has to experience their own mistakes. The reference of I have to go, I believe, means I have to let you experience it on your own. I'm here, I can help, but you need to go it alone for awhile. Great song and typical great lyrics from Cat.
