This song is about the type of girl that he likes. He is saying that the fact that she is not helpless or stuck up like other girls makes him want her. He likes the fact that she doesn't have to depend on a guy she can take care of herself!

I believe that even if you are not rich everlasting every woman must have some means of supporting herself to save for the day (if it should come) when her man decides "I've had enough". If you have this means for yourself then you don't even have to slow down to drop his off. You can just shift your car into gear and drive off into the sunset.

He's sorry for something he did that hurt her so deep he can feel her pain. He wants to ease her pain and knows that the only way to do it would be for them to part but he doesn't want to because she's a part of him. He's basically torn in two worrying what to do while feeling the pain she's in.
My bf says this song shakes him to his very core and I feel like it speaks to me too.
We should be careful of the things we do that hurt those close to us because our loved ones are a part of us and when a part of us is hurting all of us is hurting.
