I think the song could mean whatever you want it to mean and there's many different ways to interpret it. The way I look at it is almost very literal. We have all have become very wicked with higher demand for more and more money (aka the root of all evil) just to get by. So no one has a chance to "rest" or help one another. And when he says "close our eyes" he means to help eachother and come together to take a step and put an end to it.
