Explanation
"
Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me
Please remember me
Refrain: Faith
Behold the infinite horizon; be one with the boundless sea. When your darkness seems eternal, remember me by your side.
The refrain could be God's response to Dante's prayer, but could also be Dante's urging us to let go and remember that, like him, we can go through the gates of Hell and be reborn into a new life after death.

When the dark wood fell before me
And all the paths were overgrown
When the priests of pride say there is no other way
I tilled the sorrows of stone
Hauntingly beautiful, achingly sad and ultimately uplifting, each verse in Loreena McKennitt's "Dante's Prayer" has a theme. (The use of the word "he" below is meant to be gender-neutral.)

Verse 1: Suffering
The traveler finds that his road has come to an end and every way forward is blocked. Too proud to seek help for a way out, he sadly prepares his deathbed.
