Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
The last line is self-explanatory. Saluting people from a time when he was everything he's meant to be. This uses the military as a way of describing how he was everything he was meant to be, by following orders and doing as expected from other people. Also, the repetition of 'everything means nothing to me' adds to this effect of regret and hopelessness.

Reflection in the water showed an iron man still trying to
When he found his picture in the paper this diverted his attention to himself, and after seeing his reflection in the water, it showed an iron man still trying to salute. The picture in the paper represents him looking back on himself and when he does look back on himself in the reflection of the water, he sees he hasn't changed and is still doing what society expected him to, still doing what is regarded as normal and following orders. The word 'trying' could represent how there's not much left in him and further emphasises the regret for the things he may have never done and how there's not much time left.

A blue songbird on his shoulder who keeps singing over everything
The blue songbird which he left his wishes with is singing over everything (in his life) and whispering words of hopelessness and despair (everything means nothing to me) into his head. This songbird could be a metaphor for the voices he hears in his head (auditory hallucinations). He picked up the song, which is conveying that he picked up what the songbird was singing (words of hopelessness and regret) and started experiencing feeling of hopelessness and regret much more intensely since picking up the song.

Someone found the future as a statue in a fountain at
Elliott uses the word 'statue' to describe himself, something that won't change (he is referring to his future and past as a statue at attention, never changing and always doing as expected). The statue is at attention, which is obviously an order used in the army, RAF ect. The statue represents something which won't change (the future) doing as is ordered and expected (at attention). The statue is standing in a pool of water, simply representing a statue standing in a pool of water you may see in towns or shopping complexes.
