The story is about love and two lovers who no longer are together and the last lines say that life often separates those who love each other, quietly and silently and the sea washes away the footsteps on the sand of separated lovers. The should give you some idea of what it is about. The lyrics of the English version "The Autumn Leaves", are different and not in any way a translation of the French lyrics.
