The great thing about this single is that both sides are about childhood memories of Paul and John. Each of them sings about their memories, Paul on Penny and John on Strawberry. Ironically, had mentioned "Penny Lane" first in his song, "In My Life". He wrote a verse about a bus trip from his house into inner Liverpool. Because he had second thoughts about the song being too personal John dropped that verse. Paul picked up the ball a couple of years later. Penny Lane is such an upbeat song that reflects the joy of these memories in its music.

It's "honey bear in the country sun", not "county fair". Sly's line is: And everything, is cool, ooh yeah. It's about a seasonal girlfriend that is only available during the summer. There are plenty of songs that deal with seasonal love or heartbreak. "See You In September" and "It Might As Well Rain Until September". Summer time is something just about everyone relates to because schools are closed, vacations are usually taken in the summer, Sly hit it right on the head with this one.

Always hated this song (especially the Tijuana Brass version that misses the point totally) until I heard Will Robert Scott sing his version on his early '70s Warner Bros. Album. He's the cowriter of the tune and sings it like he's lived it. The lyrics are pretty straight forward. Two lovers separated, but remembering the joy they gave to each other. Unfortunately they never reunite and the woman dies waiting in vain. Even as she's dying she's holding out for his return... "I will return, I will return". Check out YouTube for Scott's version. Takes on a whole new meaning when you heard him sing it.

Tony Bennett's rendition is the best of all the covers I've heard. Got a chance to ask him once where the song came from and he mentioned "The All American". The version by Ray Bolger (the Scarecrow in Oz) is great too. Anyway, the song is sung from an older man's perspective, somewhat filled with regret at what might have been when love was young. Thinking back he realizes you get only so many chances to ride the merrygoround and then it's over. Appreciate the moment when it happens for once it's gone, it's gone for good.
