Meaning
If you look at it metaphorically, which I tend to do whenever you have biblical references etc, it really is referring to the fallen angel. The singer of the song is essentially likening himself to, if he is not himself a fallen angel. The Fallen Ones didn't get a reprieve, do not enjoy the same forgivenesses that humans do and so he is trying to find a loophole in the bible in order to get into the pleasures of heaven, vs. The pain etc of hell. Apparently he knew that he had it coming for his actions and rebellion and is now trying to make up for it as an afterthought. I run a writing group and we used this particular song as a prompt. It was really fun to see how our resident fallen angel character used it.
