Fickle means when ones heart changes frequently when it comes to someones loyalty, interest, and/or affection. His heart changed too much. When your eyes are woozy, you can't see properly; everything is blurry. He couldn't see past the lies he was given. But now that he realizes how misguided he was, he can't find any truth out of what he is told. Now, he has trouble deciding what is true and what is false because of his past experiences. He no longer is fascinated in the unknown because he is scared of being told lies again.

They knew what they were doing ("you know not what is in store") By weak hands of the poor, he means people who were lacking their pride. The thieves lied and said they cared for the poor, but broke their hearts and took away the little pride they had left.
