I never thought anyone could ever write a depressing song about happiness, but here it is. I can agreee with it wholeheartedly since I personally experienced how happiness can crush you if it's not your own (Happiness damn near destroys you, breaks your faith to pieces on the floor) or when you remember the the times when you were happy but you no longer are (Light the fuse and get away, 'cause happiness throws a shower of sparks) But in the same time, casing after happiness won't get you anywhere. When it's your time, it will come to you. I love how they personalized Happiness by calling her she.

Perfection will not come
As humans, we always strive for the perfect partner, but this whole song is about the fact that there is no such thing as an easy and perfect relationship. Perfection will not come. A good relationship means work and there is no such thing as your perfect opposite and no struggles whatsoever.

trouble like sparks fly upwards innocent

Is this all we get
"Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward." is a bible verse from Job 5:7 (KJV) In this verse, Eliphas explains to Job, that mankind faces troubles, but if he would only repent and come back to God, it wouldn't have to be like this since God can ease his troubles.

The interesting thing about the dates in this song is that 1961 is the year the Berlin Wall was build, whereas 1989 it was torn down again. So I think that this song is about two brothers who get seperated in WWII and then find together again but are seperated from their other brother thanks to the Berlin Wall. The war broke, battered, shattered them, but they will always stand together. The Fray has a history of writing songs about european countries like "Munich", "Vienna", "Rainy Zurich" and I believe "Hundred" is also about Germany.
