To me, this song is about a man, who can't find his place in the world. The people in his life doesn't really understand him, maybe even openly rejecting his company. He is a person, who doesn't belong anywhere, he just sticks out of the crowd. A black sheep. Later he falls in love with someone, who seems lovely on the outside, but deep within she is the same as everyone else. He tries to get her attention, but his insecurities win and he never takes his chances. Then the opportunity passes, without him ever trying. It destroys him and he won't recover from it. He spends the rest of his life in regret, scarred forever by a love that never actually happened.
