The fear of being judged and condemned in the final days for the wrongs you have accumulated, is always in the back of one's mind; never, truly, is it feared, however, until it is seen with the naked eye that the last day of judgment does, in fact, exist. Our singer now knows the in which he so feared, previously, exists; now it is too late for him to do anything about it. The terror he felt during his moments of, "What-If" are now "What's-to-Be."

This shattered earth
I lift my eyes to fire
Here it is; the fire raining down from the heavens as a result of judgment day. The end is here, and across the broken surface of the earth, our singer lifts his eyes to the vision of fire, coming to cleanse the earth of the sins and sinners within it. He knows it is part of the imminent nature in which he described just a verse prior, stating, "Did I think I can run away?" He realizes, he cannot.
