This is taking from my 2nd explanation in this song so if you've read that there's no point in reading this. The story behind the song is about Brian's passing on to the next life (or heaven or anything else you believe in) because while Brian was "Playing a show down the road" his friend had gotten into a fatal car accident killing him almost immediately, Brian couldn't make it to the funeral because of another show he had planned which is where the line "I'm sorry I couldn't go" comes from. Added on- The reason He had gotten into the accident was because he was having a fight with his girlfriend over the phone and couldn't pay attention to the road.

Did you hear the '59 Sound coming through on Grandmama's radio
The title and the line refer to the first Amp that Brian and his friend got, which was passed down from 1959, and (not sure about this but I remember reading it) it was partially broken, a sound would play, ruining most of their sessions. "The '59 Sound" is how he refers to it.

This could also be referencing the previously explained line. What I am thinking is that there was some sort of fight and He brought up the friend who had been recently deceased, maybe shot from "bulletproof and free again".

Straight forward, meaning to remind "Gayle" (not her actual name as Brian revealed) If she calls or asks what happened to him after they split up or broke up. This is a recurring theme throughout the entire song. I will not write an explanation for each and every time the "chorus" is spoken.
