He wants to go back to the middle of nowhere, where there were not any problems on his life, anyone criticized him, anyone was on point of what he was always doing, he was just a normal guy. He does not have to worry bout nothing. That is the point of the name of the song, they want to take the long way home, they do not want to return home (home is referring to the band) because there are the problems.
