Like Harry Chapin, I feel that Gordon Lightfoot can really turn a phrase. In just a few lines he can sketch the past, present, and future of a situation (though usually not as darkly or bizarrely as Chapin often did). In this song he reawakens the raw hurt of a relationship gone wrong (feelings and memories that have softened with the passing years). All at once I'm there again, feeling the hurt again, and trying to find the right path out of a situation I never saw coming! Wow, what a masterful lyric!!!
