The song seems to be about a person near the end of his rope so to speak.. Every decision he has made has led to more problems than it solved and he is searching for anything to keep him afloat so to speak. The lyrics suggest he keeps looking back instead of forward or where he is and is searching for guidance and hoping it will change him so he can make the right decisions....Seems like the author was going through a pretty dark period in his life
