The joke here was a true belly laugh for me and my friends in Troop One, Bakersfield, CA in the late fifties. My dad was an International Scout Representative and architect. My dad's company car was a 1952 Cadillac and my Mom drove a Nash Gambler convertable. Though my Dad's go-to car was a hopped-up '54 Dodge station wagon which topped 150mph at the Fomoso drag strip. Hauling scouts to camp-outs, he would both frighten and amuse us with his illegal speeding. So "Beep-Beep" had special meaning for most of us at Troop One.
