Pumbaa, a warthog (warthogs have thick skin), has self confidence problems, hence the first line of that verse. It hurt that his friends never stood downwind because his gas is so smelly, stinky, whatever, that it can make everyone go away. Also, downwind is normally the direction in which gas travels.
