And we're slow to acknowledge the knots in our laces
As a society we take many things for granted - primarily the technological advances that make our daily lives so easy in the Westernized world. We look at "knots in our laces" and fail to wonder when, why, where, how, and by whom they were tied. Have we become stupid and lazy in this most modernized world? If we take the time to investigate and engage with our surroundings we may be surprised and impressed. Not only with the magic around us, but the magic inside of us.

Lately you've been tan, suspicious for the winter
I think this means that people are unnecessarily concerned with superficial things. Remember the story of the ant and the grasshopper preparing for winter? The ant was fine because he prepared for the harshness of real life, I.E. Storing enough food for the winter. The grasshopper on the other hand was more concerned with "living it up" so to speak, and so thus did not properly prepare for life's harsh realities. I think this line insinuates that while people may plan for the future, in the end it may not matter because their primary premise for thinking (mindset about what is truly important) is flawed from the beginning.

And we're slow to acknowledge the knots in our laces
As a society we are take most things around us for granted in the sense that we don't take time to think about what is in our daily lives, not do we consider the how, when, where, and why such things are in existence; things just are, like knots in our laces.
