watch it burn
Society tempts you with a bundle of money, sucks you toward a job or career. Then society tempts you with spending it on whatever 'it' wants material things like fancy cars, the latest technology gizmos, big chemically maintained lawns, etc. It's not wrong to spend money, but if you've lost your focus on how to spend the money, it can truly feel like you are just 'watching it burn'.

It's an argument regarding quality of life.
Living life 'large', 'fast and furious', 'partying hard', injecting a little risk and excitement, may shorten your life, but at least you're living it, 'feeling alive'.
Conversely, if you timidly sit back, never 'surf the tide', 'ride them horses', fearfully eat only a bland diet, are unwilling to take any gamble, never explore the world, you'll live a longer but endure a very boring, unremarkable life.
