Everything that he once knew is being turned upside-down (in other words, the foundations of his life have "come unstuck"). The woman he loves, the one good thing he had in his life, is now running away from him, back towards the dark, intimidating unknown. (This ties back to his childhood fear of the dark, and thus frightens him greatly.).

What at first appear to be common, insignificant childhood fears, if looked at more closely, can actually hint at the main reason for the problems he faces later in life. All of these fears point toward a similar theme: insecurity about himself. Dentists would point out the imperfections with his body; being in the dark would mean being left alone with just himself and the unknown; pretty girls would remind him of the "perfection" that he feels is more than what he deserves; starting conversations would induce the need to look good and not "mess up." Therefore, it is established that the singer does not feel good about himself, and seeks external things and people to lift him up.

As the singer tries to run from himself, he finds hope from the one "good" thing he believes in in his life: the lady he loves. By doing so, he places her on the "highest shelf," a point of utmost respect and reverence. Unfortunately, the highest shelf is also the one most out of reach; therefore, the singer finds the good in his life slipping from his grasp.

Both the character in the movie and the two characters in the song are trying to escape parts of their own selves. The girl is running away from everything she knows (the world around her), whereas the man is running away from his own internal insecurities and even possibly self-hatred.
