One of the all-time greatest hymns! Thomas Dorsey wrote it and put it to a tune that he adapted for the song. He wrote it following a great tragedy in his life. His wife died in childbirth and then two days later the child died as well. In the middle of life's greatest pains this song gives consolation from God. God does not always move in supernatural ways to keep believers from the pain of death and tragedy, but he does promise to be with his believing children through the trials, "taking their hand," and he also promises that it won't always be life in a painful and fallen world. Jesus will return and death itself will "die" and be no more!
