I feel like this song is about the effects of war. "A cab driver to sky diver to survivor" means a normal man is drafted in a war and survives. "Blood brother, surrogate mother" refers to his families and friends that he has to leave behind. To the persona (the soldier), life is dark and bleak. The "fight of my life" refers to the war he has to fight. Sunrise represents the end of the war and new hope for him.

Everyone is interpreting it as something like fighting cancer, but they forget that sometimes can tell a story as well.
I think the song is just about a person living in a post-apocalyptic era after a nuclear war, where radioactive ash clouds fall on the earth and one can't even see the sun. Survivors are fighting each other for survival and dominance. The speaker is learning to survive in the chaos of the apocalypse. The part about the "sun hasn't died" means he hasn't lost hope yet. He is asserting that he will live on in the "New Age."

The song is about having dreams of joining the army because the persona wants to serve his country and gain honor and glory. But then he realizes that the army is not always about earning glory and that there is the risk of losing not only his life but the freedom of the country which he fights for. He has no choice but to fight, not because he wants to win glory or earn medal, but because his life and freedom depends on it. In this, his idealistic dreams of serving his nation are twisted by reality.
