John Locke from LOST is a free spirit. Throughout the show, his 'catchphrase' has been "Don't tell me what I can't do!" It seems that his life before the crash was a series of disappointments, from his love life to his employer to his physical condition.

After reuniting with his biological father, he discovers he is a conman who tricked him into donating a kidney to him, only to have his father leave again. Later, he is paralyzed and nearly murdered by his father.

When he wakes up from the plane crash, John Locke finds that he is no longer paralyzed. He thinks it is the power of the island, and he turns to it for guidance. He describes himself as a man of faith and of fate, and he uses the words "destiny" and "divine intervention" to describe their situation on the island.
