The song is about the end of the world basically (People thought that the world was gonna end in the 2000's thats why he says "So to night were gonna party like it's 1999.") Even though the world definitely didn't end the song is still meaningful because it's saying even in the darkest times you should try to be happy or make good memories cause you never know when it will be your last.

I think this song is supposed to be about how she loves this guy so much to the point where she is afraid that someone will take him from her or he will leave her. Since she is afraid that he will leave or someone will take him from her she tries to keep him near her only trying to keep him to herself sort of like a hostage. The reason she does this is because she never experienced love like his which is why she describes him like he's really special with the lyrics,"Gold on your fingertips Fingertips against my cheek Gold leaf across your lips Kiss me until I can't speak."

I think the songs about him and someone who he loves and has been with had a falling out. This person is important to him because they have known each other since childhood which explains the lyrics "Underneath were all these pennies fallen from the hands of children They were there and then were gone" He wants to apologize but he finds out that in the morning she is leaving he does not want her to leave due to the fact that he can't move on which is why in the song he talks about the sun harshly with the lyrics "In the morning waking up to terrible sunlight All diffuse like skin abuse the sun is half its size When you talk you hardly even look in my eyes In the morning, in the morning". The girl however wants to leave to move on from their relationship and in the morning takes some things for memories and leaves ( which explains the lyrics "In the doorway holding every letter that I wrote In the driveway pulling away putting on your coat In the ocean washing off my name from your throat In the morning, in the morning" The man knows she leaves which leaves him feeling defeated which is told in the last few lyrics of the song "And if I just stay awhile here staring at the sea And the waves break ever closer, ever near to me I will lay down in the sand and let the ocean leave Carry me to Innisfree like pollen on the breeze." At least that's what i got from it.

I think the song is about how the government likes to control us and force their ideals on us. The kids represent the people and the teachers represent the government. The kids (the people) are forced to do things the teachers (the government) wants even if what they are forcing is not needed or some of the kids don't like it, they see the kids (the people) as inferior to them because they lack power therefore there just another brick in the wall to them. (also when the lyrics " no dark sarcasm in the classroom" is supposed to mean no making fun of government officials and the lyrics "teachers leave them kids alone!' is supposed to mean the government needs to leave the people alone and to stop controlling us ) This is of course my opinion.
