When I first read the lyrics, I was astounded. Not because the lyrics are awesome or something (they are!), but because this song is about love, prejudice, and change, a different perspective and portraying that's all. You fight for things you believe are right and just, but when you have to give up, it doesn't mean that you are weak. Rather, it means that you have to take a step back to observe how things are going, and find a new approach to tackle the problem. When you lose faith (your faith walks on broken glass) or are hurt (did someone break your heart inside etc), you should actually accept the change. This is what I think :)

It's not really about war as in the physical sense of fighting, but rather, emotional war. He was popular last time and 'ruled the world', ut now he is experiencing rejection. The 'mirror, sword and shield' are actually referring to the help that he needs. The 'mirror' is his reflection on what he had done wrong, the 'sword and shield' is for him to 'fight and defend' himself when he seeks forgiveness from his friends. There are still people out there who are jealous of him and wants to see him defeated. This song is more about rejection and depression, not war and fighting, in my opinion. :)
